Personal

For those of you who get my e-mail address from magazine articles or online and write to me inquiring as to whether I am the Sandra Tonn you went to school with in Barrie, Ontario, or who you knew in Belleville, Aurora or Toronto, the answer is yes, yes, yes and yes. I moved from Ontario to British Columbia in 1999.

The mountains, ocean, and an opportunity to work with Alive Publishing called me West. I worked at Alive as a full-time editor for four years before deciding to broaden my services, horizons and personal growth opportunities. I’m excited about the many new relationships I’ve made with additional outstanding organizations that share my passion for educating others in the areas of whole food nutrition and hatha yoga. My freelance writing and teaching also allows me to run a home holistic nutrition consulting practice in which I counsel people on a one-on-one basis.

Whole food nutrition, natural health, and yoga are personal and professional passions. I am well known for “walking the talk.” My kitchen, for example, is always full of delicious, organic, whole foods. On any given day there may be grains soaking as preparation for dinner or a salad; fresh fruits and vegetables drying in the dehydrator for backpacking or kayaking trips; muffins or cookies, made with natural sweeteners, in the oven; a spelt-raisin bread baking in the bread maker; pickles fermenting; and homemade salad dressings and sauces ready and waiting in the refrigerator.

I start each and every day with yoga. I grow organic food, shop at local farmer’s markets and organic outlets, eat in season, compost daily, think ecologically, and use natural alternatives for everything from household cleaning to health care remedies. My dedication to a holistic lifestyle is not always easy, but it allows me to live with a truth that I can grow with and pass on to others. When all is said and done, my work is my life and my life is my work.

I certainly miss my large family and many friends in Ontario, but am also thrilled with the many people, experiences and opportunities that the Vancouver area and British Columbia has offered. Now, with my wonderful partner, Lowell, I have moved to the paradise city of Powell River. I am so excited to play a role in a conscious, active and wonderful community. It's the perfect place to share my passions, both professional and personally. We enjoy ocean kayaking, hiking and backcountry skiing—and all the wilderness and nature that go with them. My personal yoga practice, spiritual and scientific studies, photography, friends, and family also balance out my love of work and wilderness.
